What's the Difference Between an MC and a Wedding Celebrant?

May 2026  ·  5 min read  ·  Weddings

They both hold a microphone. They both stand at the front of the room. They're often confused — but a wedding celebrant and a wedding MC are entirely different roles with different training, different responsibilities, and different parts of the day.

The Wedding Celebrant

A celebrant is legally authorised to solemnise marriages. They conduct the wedding ceremony — the legal part of the day that makes you officially married. Their role covers:

Once the ceremony ends, the celebrant's formal role is complete. Some celebrants stay for the reception as guests; most don't. They are not responsible for the reception program.

The Wedding MC

An MC (Master of Ceremonies) hosts the reception — the celebration that follows the ceremony. They have no legal function. Their role covers:

An MC is not qualified or required to do anything a celebrant does. They are two separate vendors for two separate parts of the day.

Can the Same Person Do Both?

Sometimes. Some celebrants also offer MC services, and some MCs have obtained celebrant accreditation. If a vendor offers both, ask careful questions about their experience in each role — they're both significant responsibilities, and a vendor who does one exceptionally may be average at the other.

For most weddings, using separate professionals for each role produces better outcomes. You're hiring for depth of expertise in each area, not breadth.

Which Do You Need?

If you're getting married: both. The celebrant handles the ceremony; the MC handles the reception. They should be briefed jointly at some point to ensure the transition from ceremony to reception is coordinated — particularly around timing, photography, and the cocktail hour.

Brief them together at least once before the day. A celebrant who knows when the reception starts and an MC who knows when the ceremony is finishing produce a much smoother handover than two separate vendors who've never spoken.
